About Susan Nuttall
Susan Nuttall grew up in North Queensland, steeped in her mum's handmade ceramic practice. With early Japanese anime playing on the TV in the background, there was a thin grey clay film covering every surface including her mum.
Her practice formally began in 2017; studying ceramics at Kensington and Chelsea College in London, she was exposed to a wide range of hand building techniques and approaches to surface decoration.
Now based in Perth, Western Australia, Susan works from her studio creating handmade ceramics through hand built pottery methods, including Kurinuki - a traditional Japanese technique where each piece is carved from a solid block of clay. This process means every work is entirely unique.
These influences come together to form a distinct body of work. She often draws inspiration from what’s around her - from fronds found on the ground while walking her 85kg Great Dane, to sculptural pieces that blend Astro Boy and ancient Egypt iconography.
Her work draws from a blend of ancient influences, oriental traditions and contemporary ideas, moving between sculptural and functional forms.
Each piece within her collection is created with intention - whether to intrigue, raise a smile, or simply hold a cup of tea.
Susan regularly exhibits her ceramic art across Australia. Based in Perth, she creates handmade ceramics that are available at the Japanese Flea Market in Fremantle, and offers hand built pottery through custom commissions.
